Often, sofas and armchairs are made from very different materials that are difficult to recycle, as well as being assembled in a non-reversible manner. In addition, chains specializing in their disposal are lacking.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In 2017, the impact of waste from the furniture sector was 10.78 million tons, of which about 2.5 consisted of mattresses and upholstered furniture (source: <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/eeb.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/05\/Report-on-the-Circular-Economy-in-the-Furniture-Sector.pdf\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">European Environmental Bureau<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">). In addition, according to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/europur.org\/the-end-of-life-of-flexible-polyurethane-foam-from-mattresses-and-furniture\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">EUROPUR<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> &#8211; European association of flexible polyurethane foam blocks manufacturers &#8211; upholstered furniture in Europe is disposed of in the generic municipal solid waste chain and therefore considered as &#8220;bulky&#8221; waste.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The necessary circular renovation of upholstered furniture involves the implementation of new solutions to reduce its impact by implementing a systemic and circular design approach that involves all the constituent elements of upholstered furniture and their production and assembly processes, but also the distribution and post-consumer stages.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Circular Sofa Platform <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">is a research project funded by MUR with PNRR funds within the Made in Italy Circular and Sustainable Extended Partnership (MICS), which focuses on developing a new upholstered furniture construction paradigm based on circularity. Circular Sofa Platform aims to design, experiment and prototype new circular upholstered furniture models, working on:\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">the parametric and generative design of alternative parts and components to reduce or eliminate the consumption of materials that are difficult to recycle;<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">the definition of a modular system to facilitate the assembly and disassembly of all components;<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">the selection and use of circular materials and raw materials for different parts and components;<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">the integration of B2B and B2C services concerning the circularity of upholstered furniture such as repair, recycling, and remanufacturing.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The aim of the project is to develop innovative solutions at the product-service and process system level that aim to extend the useful life of upholstered furniture, reducing the energy footprint of the final product and, at the same time, enhancing and implementing the heritage of industrial and craftsmanship knowledge present in the various Italian manufacturing districts.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The four universities developing the Circular Sofa Platform project aim to create Proof-of-Concept (PoC) related to parts, structures and components of a circular sofa by experimenting with:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">upholstery alternatives to polyurethane foam and made from recyclable and\/or biobased materials (Politecnico di Milano);<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">structures redesigned according to principles of modularity and extensibility, to facilitate assembly and disassembly of the finished product (University of Bologna);<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">the use of natural textile fibers for upholstery, padding and other connective structural elements, enhancing new local supply chains such as hemp (Politecnico di Torino);<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">the use of regenerated leathers that employ dyeing processes with low environmental impact (University of Florence).<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The project will involve businesses, business associations and other stakeholders, both during the research and preliminary analysis phases and during the co-design and prototyping phases.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/polifactory.test.polimi.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/09\/divano-testo-min.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-10396 size-large lazyload\" data-src=\"https:\/\/polifactory.test.polimi.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/09\/divano-testo-min-1024x683.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"945\" height=\"630\" data-srcset=\"https:\/\/polifactory.test.polimi.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/09\/divano-testo-min-1024x683.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/polifactory.test.polimi.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/09\/divano-testo-min-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/polifactory.test.polimi.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/09\/divano-testo-min-768x512.jpg 768w, https:\/\/polifactory.test.polimi.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/09\/divano-testo-min-1116x744.jpg 1116w, https:\/\/polifactory.test.polimi.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/09\/divano-testo-min-806x537.jpg 806w, https:\/\/polifactory.test.polimi.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/09\/divano-testo-min-558x372.jpg 558w, https:\/\/polifactory.test.polimi.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/09\/divano-testo-min-655x437.jpg 655w, https:\/\/polifactory.test.polimi.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/09\/divano-testo-min.jpg 1200w\" data-sizes=\"(max-width: 945px) 100vw, 945px\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;base64,PHN2ZyB3aWR0aD0iMSIgaGVpZ2h0PSIxIiB4bWxucz0iaHR0cDovL3d3dy53My5vcmcvMjAwMC9zdmciPjwvc3ZnPg==\" style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 945px;
