Distributed Design for Biodiversity – Distributed Design
Exploring distributed design for the biodiversity of urban and agri-food systems
Distributed Design is an evolution of the Distributed Design Market Platform project, funded by the Creative Europe Program. Its goal is to implement a global network of Fab Labs, promoting and enhancing the connection between makers, designers, and the European market.
Distributed Design for Biodiversity is an experimental initiative within Distributed Design that explores the role of design and open, distributed production in relation to the protection and promotion of biodiversity in both natural and human-altered ecosystems. The initiative aims to design innovative open-source solutions to increase knowledge, study, and monitor biodiversity in agro-systems such as pastures, orchards, and vineyards, as well as in urban systems like parks and metropolitan forests. It is funded by the Creative Europe Platform and supported by New European Bauhaus. Open-source solutions, leveraging digital technologies, should help people understand the characteristics of local biodiversity and support local communities in protecting and enhancing it. Additionally, they should promote the development of systems and tools that facilitate processes like urban reforestation, including the recovery of traditional techniques.
Design for Distributed Biodiversity will unfold in four phases:
- An open call for ideas invites young designers, makers, independent innovators, and experts interested in presenting open-source solutions that explore the role of Distributed Design in supporting the monitoring, health, and growth of biodiversity in urban ecosystems and agro-systems.
- Two ideas related to supporting biodiversity in urban and agro-ecosystems, presented by two different groups, will be selected by a jury of design, making, and circular economy experts.
- The two selected teams will develop their projects and prototypes with the technical-scientific support of Polifactory, working as Makers in Residence, demonstrating the potential to materialize solutions with real production capabilities.
- The two projects will be promoted on the platform distributeddesign.eu and presented at events and initiatives dedicated to design and making.
